Paper cover and gift envelope making

Newspaper Covers

The trend to use paper covers and gift envelopes, especially from newspapers and recycled paper is on the rise. In addition to being eco-friendly, (in lieu of using plastics covers for various purpose), the process of making these covers satisfies the creative urge in the maker.

Given the increasing demand for paper covers, especially in the light of the Government urging the public to stop using plastic covers, Nithya Saadhana started the course in paper cover and gift envelope making in 2012. The activity aligns with the aptitude of youth with Intellectual Developmental Disorders as they can independently cut, fold and glue paper in accordance to the design.

Some members of the society help in cutting according to size, and the newspapers are donated by family, friends and neighbours.

Around 4500 to 5000 paper covers in all per month are made. There are 2 sizes of paper bags that are made. The bigger one is 10” X 12” and can hold about 1Kg to 1.5Kg. The smaller one is 6” X 10” and can hold 0.5Kg to 0.75Kg.

Gift Envelopes

Similarly, the students are trained to make gift envelopes from paper with attractive prints on them. These are A4 sized printed glossy sheets with beautiful exotic prints. One envelope can be made from one sheet. The trainees make around 100 envelopes in a month.
